Ready for a Belgian getaway?

Looking for a change of scenery near Lille?

Located 50 minutes drive from Lille and 54 minutes from our hotel Morphée ***, the city of Ghent is located in the northwest of Belgium, more or less halfway between Bruges and Brussels.

Considered one of the 3 most beautiful cities in Belgium, along with Bruges and Brussels, it is a historical city with a lot of charm. It has a medieval cobbled city center that is walkable, stunning architecture and many restaurants.

What to do in Ghent?

You can easily decide to visit the city of Ghent on foot. This city has a beautiful architecture, superb monuments but also a lot of landscapes to admire!

Here is a small guide of our favorite visits and activities:

Gravensteen Castle

You can start your visit with the famous castle of Gravensteen, an incredible fortress bordered by water. This castle was built in the 9th century and has an architecture that is inspired by the forts built in the Near East.

Within the castle, discover the collections of weapons and armors, the dungeons and torture rooms. Used as a prison in its time, you will see instruments that recall the past of the castle in the torture rooms, to soak up its past history.
You will also discover its dungeon and the magnificent view from the roofs of the district.

Discovering the medieval center

Continue your escapade by discovering the medieval center, the opportunity to stroll and contemplate the old buildings with the typical architecture of Flanders.

We suggest you 4 places to discover that make the charm of Ghent:

  • Korenmarkt : It is the largest square
  • Groentenmarkt : The square near the castle of Gravensteen
  • Sint-Baafsplein : It is a beautiful square where you can find the Saint Bavo's cathedral and the Belfry of Ghent
  •  Vrijdagmarkt : Large square located in the north of the historic heart of the city

A cruise on the canals of the historic center

Finally, you can end your tour with one of the most popular activities: a cruise through the historic center on the canals of the old city, such as the Leie and the Scheldt.

Allow 50 minutes for the entire cruise, a guide will share with you a lot of information about the different monuments you will see, such as the different squares, the churches or the castle.

If you are interested in a cruise, you can book directly on their website.
